CLIMATIC EFFECTS ON GARDENING DECISIONS

With your growing space already identified, analyzed and understood, it is now time to think about the weather patterns of the part of the world you live in.

There are basically three types of climate for gardening
1. The temperate climates where there are four seasons in a year all of them affecting a garden and plants in different ways. These are
• Winter when conditions force the plants to become dormant,
• Spring when the winter weather starts changing and plants start becoming active,
• Summer which provided the best climate for plant growth and when you will really enjoy your garden,
• Autumn when plants start preparing for winter.
2. Sub tropics have only two seasons winter and summer and the winter is mild in nature.
3. Tropical climates have fairly uniform temperatures throughout the year and plants can grow throughout.

The type of climate will affect the plants you choose to plant in your garden. Temperate climates sometimes get too cold for plants of tropical origin to survive and if the choice of your plants are tropical in nature, then you have to modify your environment by building green houses which can be heated in winter to keep the plants alive and growing.

In the tropics, plants that originate from the tropics may need a cold stimulant to break dormancy, may need additional light of lack of light in order to flower, fruit or propagate.

Understand your weather well as this will guide you in your plant choice, growing space choice and gardening systems and structures choice. To learn more about gardening, this E-book will help alot.

CHARACTERISTICS OF YOUR GARDEN SPACE

Consider the space you are going to grow your garden. Is the garden going to be either
• Indoor or
• Out door
Or is it going to be a vertical garden.
How big is the space you have and if you have to make better use of space by vertical gardening. You can learn more about vertical gardening here.
Is the space fully shaded or is it partially shaded or gets maximum sunlight. This will be very important for your choice of the plants.
Consider how the area is drained if it is out door and how you will drain the area or pots or grow in hydro phonic. Learn more about how to do hydro phonic gardening here.
Consider the soil characteristics. Will they need drainage, do they have a hard pan that may need deep digging to break?
Check the orientation of the area with respect to sun light and winds as this will affect your plants when planted. A north south orientation gives maximum exposure to the sun.

With the area fully taken into account, you need to understand your climate well. Where do you live in respect to the world weather patterns?

Learn about gardening

When you decide you want to start your first garden, your next question is how do I learn about gardening?
There are ways of learning gardening and the first thing is to lean the basics of gardening. Materials are available that can teach you by distance learning. garden mentainance is mainly done by practicing gardening and in this case you try to put what you have learnt in practice. Therefore establishing your trial garden as you learn is highly recommended.

There are E-books about gardening and these will also give you alot of information to keep on refering to.Some of the best resources I have come accross are as:
Gardening made easy which teaches all aspects of gardening,
Secrets of verical gardening and a guide to growing roses.

The best resource for gardening in my experience I have found are the various forums or gardening communities and I will benefit any new and old gardener because they can ask questions and members are always willing to assist.

The most important areasthat a E-book or a distance learning gardening programme should cover are:
1. Basic agronomy: Explain in basis terms how crops grow and what they need,
2. Site selection,
3. Growing area or media preparation,
4. Planting material selection,
5. The planting process,
6. Care of the planted plants.
These are wide topics which may take time to learn and there will always be new things and experience comes with time. Eventually by practicing, you end up having green fingers.

Pruning flowers: Benefits and Risks

Pruning flowers has its benefits and risks that it poses to the plants, how ever the benefits out way the risk and the risk may be mitigated by observing simple guidelines.

The benefits associated with pruning flowers can be summarizes as below:

Pruning flowers renews the plant and improves the plants vigor. When pruning flowers, the pruning aims at removing the old and non productive parts of the plant giving a chance to new shoots that are more vigorous to start growing. This completely renews the plant by producing new shoots that can produce better flowers, foliage and eventually a good fruit.

Pruning flowers enables the flower plant growth to be directed to the right direction especially in restricted areas of growing like in indoor plants whose space is limited. Pruning can also reduce the plant size of the plant to manageable size where the plant is growing in the way it was not intended to grow.

Pruning flowers opens up the flower plants letting in light and making it easy to control pests and diseases. A thick canopy can be a hiding place for pests and the microclimate in the canopy provided a good environment for disease causing micro-organisms.

The risks associated with pruning flowers can be summarized as below:
If flowers are excessively pruned, they can die from the resulting stress. Pruning should aim at establishing a balance between the foliage removed and the parts that are left to support the plant.

The biggest risk in pruning flowers is the risk of contamination of the plants by the tools. As one prunes from one flower plant to the next using the same pruning tools, diseases are moved from one plant to the next and the whole garden may end up being infected from just one sick plant. It is therefore important to use clean cutting equipment and to frequently sterilize the tools to make sure that disease spread is limited.

If these guidelines are observed, a gardener is able to realize more benefits from pruning flowers than from not pruning them.

A simple guide to starting a flower garden.

For those with interest in gardening, starting a flower garden may look like a big task if you are doing it for the first time. But it is actually a simple step by step affair.

Detailed below are some guidelines to help in staring a flower garden.
1. Identify the area you want to locate the garden. The area should be well drained if it is indoors and also not so shaded as most plants like some degree of sunshine. If you want to establish an indoor flower garden, consider the amount of shade and light which comes indoors and also how you will drain the excess water from the growing pots.
2. Prepare your area well. When starting a flower garden out door, dig up the soil deep enough to break any hard pan that may be there, mix the soil with some compost, some dolomite will provide an acidity buffer and then apply some phosphate base dressing fertilizer like triple super phosphate because this helps in root establishment. If you are starting a flower garden in containers, preparation of the media is of key importance and how it is filled into the containers. The preparation should allow for the media to drain sufficiently because this is very important for the plants not to be in over-watered conditions and also for the media to hold enough water for the plant.
3. Selecting the right flower varieties is also very important when starting a flower garden. Select varieties that you like and that are suitable for your growing environment and for the purpose you want the flowers for. Some flower varieties make very good cut flower for the vase whileothers are good for their foliage and as bedding or hedge plants. Bear this in mind when selecting flowers for your garden.
4. Order the planting material when you are ready with land preparation. For the planting stock, check that they are health and free frompests and diseases. When planting your flower garden, ensure that you observe the planting density for the particular flower variety, check that you plant at the right depth and ensure the media is well watered before and after planting.

If all the above steps are observed keenly, then starting your flower garden moves to the next phase where the emphasis is on taking care of the garden. There are cultural practices that have to be done in a garden and these include and are not limited to pruning, watering, fertilizer application, pest and disease control, weed control among others. Any serious gardener needs to understand how these operations are supposed to be done inorder to be successful as a gardener.
